KEMI Unveils its Strategic Plan (2023/24 - 2027/28) to Drive Educational Leadership and Excellence

The Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) has officially launched its new Strategic Plan for 2023/24 – 2027/28, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to transform education leadership and management in Kenya. The event took place in Nairobi, graced by the Director General of Education, Dr. Elyas Abdi, as the chief guest. The occasion brought together key stakeholders in the education sector, including CEOs from various ministries departments and agencies under the Ministry of Education, NGOs, and KEMI Council Members.

A Vision for the Future of Education Leadership

In his keynote speech, Dr. Elyas Abdi emphasized the critical role KEMI plays in enhancing the capacities of education managers across the country. He lauded KEMI’s efforts in driving the continuous professional development of education leaders and aligning its strategic objectives with Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), and global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa Agenda 2063.

“The KEMI Strategic Plan comes at a time when the education sector is undergoing significant reforms, and the need for well-equipped leaders is paramount,” noted Dr. Abdi. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the initiatives outlined in the plan, which focus on improving leadership competencies, strengthening research and consultancy, and enhancing service delivery in the education sector.

Dr. Maurice Odondo, the Chief Executive Officer of KEMI, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the pivotal role the Strategic Plan will play in fostering institutional growth and ensuring that KEMI remains a leader in capacity building within the education sector. “This plan embodies our collective vision to empower education managers at all levels with the knowledge and skills needed to lead effectively. Through targeted training and research, we will continue to shape the future of education leadership in Kenya and beyond,” said Dr. Odondo.

He further emphasized the importance of leveraging research and strategic partnerships to align KEMI’s objectives with emerging trends in education management, ensuring the institute remains agile and responsive to the changing landscape of the education sector.

Focus Areas of the Strategic Plan

The 2023/24 – 2027/28 Strategic Plan has been developed to address the evolving needs of the education sector. It builds on the achievements of the previous strategic plan and introduces new priorities aimed at enhancing KEMI’s contribution to national and regional educational development. The plan’s key areas of focus include:

  • Demand-driven Training and Consultancy: A commitment to providing leadership training that addresses the current and future needs of education managers at all levels.
  • Excellence in Service Delivery: Strengthening internal processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of KEMI’s training and consultancy services.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Leveraging partnerships with both public and private sector stakeholders to enhance KEMI’s impact and reach.
  • Institutional Capacity Building: Expanding KEMI’s infrastructure and resources to meet the growing demand for its services.
  • Research and Innovation: Emphasizing research that drives policy formulation and education management practices in line with global standards.

A Collaborative Approach

The launch event highlighted the collaborative efforts that went into the development of the Strategic Plan. KEMI Council Chairperson, Dr. Mercy Karogo, commended the KEMI team, stakeholders, and partners for their active participation in the consultative process. “This Strategic Plan reflects the collective input of all our stakeholders, and its successful implementation will require continued collaboration,” she remarked.
